A few days ago, in a "social activity" ??????????, yes of that type (+18), where we all end up being "philosophers" and believe that we have the "formula" to fix the world, one of my friends said : "... what we have to do is go live in Liberland...". I honestly thought it was one of those jokes that people make when they have "two boards under water" and that I had not understood, then he commented: "Don't you know what I'm talking about? Well, I'll leave it to you for homework home"
Today that I've "done my homework" I'm afraid I'll look stupid for perhaps being one of the few people who didn't know Liberland. I know that many of us have imagined living in a country where there are no taxes, government, laws, police, army, bureaucracy, borders, public debt, inflation, central banks, fiduciary currency, trade restrictions, regulations, censorship, corruption, violence, war, poverty, pollution, discrimination, injustice, oppression, or anything that limits your individual freedom. Or am I wrong?
Well, to my amazement, that country exists, at least in theory because it does not have international recognition, and yes, it is called Liberland, a 7 km2 micronation located between Serbia and Croatia, on the western bank of the Danube River. Liberland was proclaimed on April 13, 2015 by Vit Jedlicka, a Czech politician and activist with a libertarian ideology, who proclaimed himself president of the new republic.
Liberland is based on the principles of anarcho-capitalism, a school of thought that advocates the abolition of the State and the replacement of its functions with the free market and private property. According to , Liberland has as its motto "Live and Let Live", and as its anthem "National Anthem of Liberland". Its flag is yellow, black and white, and its shield represents a bird that symbolizes freedom, a flower that symbolizes prosperity, and a sun that symbolizes energy.
But the most interesting thing about Liberland is that its official currency is Bitcoin, the first and most popular decentralized cryptocurrency in the world, which works peer-to-peer, without intermediaries or central authorities, based on blockchain technology, a system of distributed LEDGER that guarantees the security, transparency and immutability of transactions. It is also ideal for Liberland, as it represents the values of freedom, autonomy, privacy, innovation, efficiency, scarcity, deflation, globalization, neutrality, inclusion, cooperation, peace and justice. Also offering other advantages such as speed, ease, accessibility, portability, divisibility, fungibility, resistance to censorship, non-confiscation, irreversibility, traceability, verifiability and auditability.
It should be noted that Liberland is not the only country that uses Bitcoin as its official currency. On June 8, 2021, El Salvador also became the first country in the world to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender along with the US dollar. Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele argued that Bitcoin would benefit the economy, tourism, financial inclusion, remittances, investment, innovation and the environment (and he is achieving it ??????).
However, Liberland and El Salvador are exceptional cases on the international scene. Most countries do not recognize Bitcoin as an official currency, nor do Liberland as a sovereign country as I mentioned previously. In fact, Liberland is not recognized by any UN member state or any international organization. It is only supported by some micronations, such as Somaliland, and some non-governmental entities, such as the Mises Institute (although I did not delve into this topic).
Liberland also does not have effective control of its territory, which is disputed between Serbia and Croatia, and which is blocked by Croatian authorities, who have detained Jedlicka and other Liberland activists several times for attempting to access the area. Liberland only has one office in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, and several virtual embassies and consulates in different countries.
But that has not prevented Liberland from receiving more than 700,000 citizenship applications on its website, of which it has only accepted about 7,000, according to criteria of merit, contribution and ideological compatibility. Liberland has also created a constitution, legislation and a judicial, fiscal, electoral, security, health, educational, transportation, communication, environmental, cultural, sports and international cooperation system. These systems are based on voluntarism, contractualism, mutualism, cooperativism, associations, donations, patronage, sponsorship, crowdfunding, crowdsourcing, peer-to-peer, open source, sharing economy, blockchain, Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.
Liberland, a country that was born on the blockchain, is undoubtedly a fascinating project, a social and political experiment that poses a challenge to the established world order, which turns its back on the dominant statist model and proposes an alternative based on individual sovereignty, voluntary cooperation and technological innovation. It is a libertarian utopia that represents financial freedom and the decentralization of power, that uses Bitcoin as the official currency, and that aspires to become the freest, most prosperous, innovative, ecological, supportive, peaceful and fairest country in the world.
