Welcome to CryptoGod-1's blog on all things crypto. Today I will be looking at a petitions from a group of 36 prominent cryptocurrency organisations for the creation of an official Bitcoin emoji.

“Bitcoin Deserves an Emoji”

The “Bitcoin Deserves an Emoji” campaign aims for the creation of a revolutionary symbol with the creation of a Bitcoin emoji. A campaign by 36 prominent cryptocurrency organisations, including Nexo, are advocating for creating an official Bitcoin emoji. The campaign aims to secure 50,000 global endorsements and has already managed over 10,000 signatures within a week of its launch.

The campaign is spearheaded by Nexo, who work as a prominent figure in the cryptocurrency space through an exchange for the purchase and sale of crypto, including Bitcoin. They have so far received plenty of traction with over 10,000 signatures, and the petition is directed at the Unicode Consortium, the governing body responsible for standardising emojis across different platforms.

Plenty of organisations have given their support to the campaign, with Brink, Bitget, Chainalysis, Kraken, Polygon, Brave, BTC Inc., Hacken, CryptoQuant, Nansen, Unstoppable Domains, Liquity, Mara, Busha, Zulu, along with many others giving a positive stance on the collective effort within the crypto community to promote Bitcoin’s broader acceptance in society.

The petition will unfold over 50 days on Change.org, culminating in a direct proposal to the Unicode Consortium during their 2024 Window site for the introduction of an official Bitcoin emoji. With the introduction of the emoji they are not just aiming for a symbolic moment, but to promote the community’s unity and determination to drive the global adoption of Bitcoin.

Back in November 2014 the Irvine-based fast food chain Taco Bell created a Change.org petition to create a taco emoji. On the Unicode it was announced that the taco, hot dog, burrito, bottle with popping cork, popcorn, turkey, cheese wedge and unicorn face were among its new emojis for 2015. The Bitcoin emoji petition will be hoping for a similar positive outcome with their proposal.

The co-founder and executive chairman of Nexo, Kosta Kantchev, has noted the need for a unified Bitcoin symbol on all keyboards. When considering the market dominance of Bitcoin and widespread adoption the need for an emoji fits in with the growing number of Bitcoin addresses globally. He feels the Bitcoin Emoji is long overdue and reflects the evolving practices and acceptance of Bitcoin. He noted:

“With 1.26 billion total Bitcoin addresses and 190,000+ professionals and tech pioneers pushing the global community forward, the Bitcoin Emoji is long overdue.”

The head of communications at Nexo, Eleonor Genova, noted the campaign is the “heartbeat of a global movement.” When considering the aspirations of a diverse community she noted role of emojis in modern communication. She also stated that a Bitcoin emoji would symbolise further legitimacy of mainstream acceptance.

She highlighted that the campaign also acknowledges Bitcoin’s impact and presence globally. She hopes the Bitcoin emoji could serve as a ubiquitous symbol appearing on billions of screens worldwide. She feels it is the industry’s collective responsibility to advocate for its creation, noting:

“While traditional currencies were quick to find their emoji counterparts, the cryptocurrency realm, with Bitcoin leading the charge, remains conspicuously absent from this digital form of expression.”

Back in 2017 a petition on Bitcoin as a character was approved as part of Unicode 10.0. The approval was for a letter B with two vertical strokes, used to represent Bitcoin. The character, as shown below, was approved as a Unicode character but not as an emoji. No platforms currently display this as an emoji.
