Splinterlands - Battle Mage Secrets: Going the Distance, using speed to my advantage!

Do repost and rate:

Hi everone and welcome back to my SPLINTERLANDS blog, I'm a bit behind with blogging as this weeks Battle Mage Secrets Challenge is already three days old, it's a Sunday today and it's the very last day for me when I need to complete the weeks blogging activities because else I fear I might not get upvoted anymore, there was just so much going on, managing the guild, submitting tournament and brawl battles, draining my ranked energy enough so it doesn't get to 50, other web3 games, real life commitments and on and on! ??

This weeks challenge is about the "Going the Distance" ruleset, in which only ranged monsters can be used, so the Close Range ability is pretty important here!

To find out how you can participate in the challenge yourself, you can find the Splinterlands post here., I really recommend doing so because this way you can fund your deck over time with less outside money.

A few summoners that are very strong in this ruleset:

  • Lir Deepswimmer: This 'older' Legendary Summoner from the Untamed set gives +2 armor, the Return Fire ability as well as the Blind ability, making the chance to miss 15% higher. (it's only $10 / BCX at the moment!)
  • Quix the Devious: Another Legendary Summoner, this one is still allowed in the Modern League for now as it's from the Chaos Legion set, he gives +1 speed to your team and -1 ranged damage to the other team.
  • Ilthain: This Epic Summoner from the Riftwatcher set gives +1 speed and the Return Fire ability to your team.
  • Fernheart: This Epic Summoner from the Riftwatcher set gives +1 health and the Close Range ability to your team.

But these are just the more specialized summoners for ranged battles, there are so many more ways to win, depending on the combined rulesets and available splinters allowed in the battle, I only own Quix but sometimes the Dragon splinter is locked out and I have to think about other strategies, as I did with the battle I want to share for this post ??

The battle I want to share for this post is a little older, from before the Glint was added, I do have some newer battles because I play every day but they were less exciting to make a post about, primarily low mana battles with only two or three monsters, and I can't make a nice post with that!

This battle is a 39 mana Wild League, Target Practice / Close Range battle with only the Fire, Water and Death splinters allowed. the Target Practice is important here, and really makes using a Martyr card important, the most obvious choices I would think of are choosing Water, or Fire because I have more Close Range monsters in these teams, but I wanted to be unpredictable and exploit the Martyr boost to the max, so I went for the Death team! Hopefully my opponent chooses Fire, because they are slower and better for my strategy, but the most obvious choice is Water and use Gargoya Devil and Wave Brood.

First look at the battlefield:

Water it is, I see the Wave Brood to counter the Target Practice ruleset and force my monsters to target the first position as long as it lives (I'm perfectly fine with that!)

This is certainly a bot, because there is little strategy is this team, the Gargoya Devil is missing and the Martyr is at the wrong place, no Close Range monsters behind it to benefit from the boost, I know I don't have a Close Range behind my Martyr because the mana didn't allowed that, but by the time Lira gets to the front, it's boosted twice and hopefully is so fast she can evade a lot of attacks, so my whole strategy was about the double martyr boost and speed.

My Line-Up:

  • : Astral Entity - reason: Dodge and Resurrect.
  • First position: Gargoya Devil - reason: Close Range.
  • Second position: Venari Marksrat - reason: Martyr.
  • Third position: Lira the Dark - reason: Fast and evasive (hopefully!)
  • Fourth position: Soulstorm - reason: Good damage, again, fast and evasive.
  • Fifth position: Supply Runner - reason: Speed management.
  • Sixth position: Ravenhood Warden - reason: Protect.

The Battle:

As planned my martyr died (he even dodged one attack) and kept the other team quite busy, Astral Entity resurrected him for another round of boost soon. Also, the enemy tank died, notice the difference in damage output from my team and my opponent ??

Good luck in hitting my team at this point, 6 speed with dodge and flying and 9 speed on the sniper spot.

Two more down, two to go, no hits on my team.

Gargoya Devil made the kill shot with a whopping 10 damage because of the Deathblow ability.

You can watch the battle unfold for yourself here.

That's it for this week everyone, I hope to see you in battle, or on my next post!
