Sega Says Crypto Games ‘Aren’t Fun to Play’

I hope you are all having an excellent day, welcome to CryptoGod-1's blog on all things crypto. The gaming giant SEGA has recently announced its dislike of crypto based gaming, admitting that as far as they are concerned blockchain games are not the way forward.

SEGA Announcement

The gaming giant SEGA, known for its variety of games and consoles, had a top executive at the company announce that “play to earn crypto games” are “no fun” to play, while they are also considering pulling back from blockchain gaming. The gaming firm had been previously looking at the options of using NFT's within their games and had signed a number of blockchain partnership deals with notable domestic crypto and gaming firms.

Sega’s Chief Operating Officer (COO) Shuji Utsumi also gave his opinion on the crypto gaming controversy, stating:

“The action in play-to-earn [P2E] games is boring. What’s the point if games are no fun?”

The COO went on to admit that SEGA are considering their options and whether or not this technology is something which will take off within the industry. With the firm having seemed bullish about its upcoming NFT partnership with doublejump.tokyo, this has been a shock to many within the industry. While the idea is not totally dead in the water, SEGA is unwilling to run blockchain based experiments on any of their most popular or recognisable franchises.

Will Others Follow?

While the COO was adamant they will not being implementing blockchain into their games anytime soon, he also added that they would wait to see if blockchain-related games were “really going to take off” before committing. He noted that firm still plans to announce the provision of IP to blockchain initiatives at some stage in 2023, and that they would be continuing to invest in blockchain-related projects.

Other companies, such as Square Enix (which created the Final Fantasy series) have not relented on their efforts with blockchain, and will be looking to implement its own blockchain gaming efforts. The same is true of both South Korean based firms WeMade and Nexon. While SEGA will implement a stand back and see attitude, those developers will forge ahead and look to get a firm grip on the market before their competitors. Whether or not they will become successful remains to be seen, but SEGA's announcement is certainly a big blow for advocates of the technology.

Have a great day.
