CollegeBoard SAT: From Paper to Digital

In March 2024, CollegeBoard plans to switch to a digital version of the SAT, compared to the paper version in place currently. This format will take place on the  application. Additionally, the format has been changed, with 54 questions split into 2 sections for Writing and Language, and 44 questions split between 2 sections for Math. The total time is 2 hours and 12 minutes, with a 10-minute break between the two sections. Compared to the paper version, which included 4 different sections: Reading; Writing and Language; Math-No Calculator; and Math with Calculator, this new version is much simpler and far shorter. These new math sections also have a built-in graphing calculator, and the no-calculator math section is gone. Furthermore, the question types vary based on how well one does in the first section.

Overall, this new test appears far easier, as the math skills required are just basic algebra and geometry, while the language arts portion no longer has passages but small paragraphs per question. Given this, the grading scale, however, seems much harsher, where missing a few questions can mean losing a lot of points. Yet, on the whole, the test is still much easier compared to its previous version.

Recap of the Changes:

  • Digital test, no bubbling in
  • 2 hours and 12-minute test
  • 2 sections of Language Arts with 54 questions
  • 2 sections of Math with 44 questions
  • Graphing calculator on both sections of Math
  • Less Math Knowledge
  • Harsher Grading Scale
